Asheville Birth Photographer: Lucy Miller’s debut

It was such an honor for me to photograph this strong, beautiful Mama as she struggled to bring her daughter into this world.  Helen Joy is a talented birth photographer in the Hendersonville area so the pressure was on!  Until I met her and her sweet husband, Noah.  I immediately felt a connection with them and we had so much fun (in between contractions of course!)  Helen Joy was a trooper.  She’s had long labors in the past and while we were hoping for a speedy delivery this time around, she was prepared for the long haul.  You could definitely feel “celebration” in the air.  These two fit together.  They were cracking each other (and everyone else) up with their lines.

Helen Joy kept saying things like, “I love giving birth!” or “I love having babies with you”.  So sweet to witness their love for each other.  She was also blessed with an incredible doula, Chama, who is amazing at what she does.  Peace just emanates from her.  HJ had an incredible support team and was surrounded in love from her husband, doula, midwives and nurses!  What a difference that makes!

Then I had the privilege of taking big brothers upstairs to meet their baby sister.  They were so excited and full of love.  It was such a blessing to be there and to witness this family together as they started a new chapter.

After laboring for several hours and doing everything that she could possibly do, the decision was made to have a cesarean section.  It was not what she had hoped for, especially because this was baby number three.  The doctors and staff were very sweet and supportive and gave her the opportunity to push for a bit longer.  Through it all, Helen Joy was so strong.  She continued to smile and even make others laugh through those hard decisions.  Grace.I sent a camera back with her other doula, Emily, who captured some awesome first images of Lucy Miller’s big debut while I documented the excited anticipation of family members in the waiting room.
